Deserts Apart

$20.00

Trombone and Piano (5’30”)

Deserts Apart is the byproduct of a connection made between two students in the Summer of 2023: Quinton Krull, an ambitious Trombonist from Las Vegas, Nevada, and Ryan McQuay Meredith, a composer and trombonist from Syracuse, New York. They met at the 2023 International Trombone Festival in the desert heat of Salt Lake City, Utah. Their collaboration quickly transpired, resulting in Deserts Apart in January of 2024.

During that summer in 2023, Ryan had just completed his first year of graduate school at Syracuse University. Located in the snow belt of the Northeast, Syracuse, New York often feels like a desert in the Winter. At its worst, Syracuse blizzards are often no less oppressive or serene than the miles of boiling dunes in the Mojave Desert. This juxtaposition of Ryan’s “desert” in the East to Quinton’s desert in the West is central to the narrative Ryan wanted to capture.
