Watercolors
Solo Piano (8’30”)
Watercolors is based on two watercolors paintings by Artist, Mary P. Murphy. Mary’s work is chromatic and impressionistic, depicting the colors and textures of the wildlife where she lives in Central New York. My goal musically is to illustrate the experience I see Mary communicating with her art. I composed a narrative that goes through the physical experience of being outdoors and painting, drawing from my own experience as a painter and illustrator. I made interval collections for each of the primary colors and then composed by mixing them, using the paintings as literal reference. Rhythm and gesture are composed in reference to the various textures and brush strokes. Birdsong transcriptions of three Central New York birds are also included: the Chickadee, the Canada Goose, and the American Robin.
Watercolors was commissioned by Dr. Tina M. Toglia with funding from CNY Arts Inc. The video below is the world premiere of the piece by Dr. Toglia with live-painting by Mary P. Murphy at the Munson Proctor Art Institute in Utitca, New York, January 21st, 2024.
